DMBHL In Memoriam

Jerry Vander Wee – DMBHL Hall of Fame Member

In addition to being one of the league’s best known personalities' Jerry was one of the league’s most intense and competitive players. You loved to have him on your team (unless he was your goalie since he always arrived at the last minute) and hated to play against him. He was with Norm and I from the start as we were all in the same gang of friends before the DMBHL started. I helped him run his own league in 1990 before branching out to start the DMBHL in 1991.

Jerry played in the DMBHL as both a player and a goalie. He captained teams, managed leagues and was a referee. There was nothing he wouldn't take on and he loved a challenge. Once he was on the rink he would turn into some kind of possessed animal and throw himself basically through the boards if that what it took to win. He was very principled and always fought hard for the values he believed in, which at some times made him unpopular but he always pushed to do what he thought was right. He loved his post game ritual of wringing out his soaked shirt after playing goalie, much to the disgust of his teammates. He loved that, being the center of attention and generating laughs for his friends at his own expense.

Just like Jerry did in hockey, he battled hard for years against cancer before finally passing away in 2009.

To this day, I still can't really believe Jerry is gone - he was one of my best friends and we all miss him very much.

Yves Nadeau – DMBHL Hall of Fame Member

Yves unique character, intensity and big slap shot defined him as a hockey player that everyone notices.  He was always serious about the game of ball hockey, how it should be played and particularly the ball that should be used!  He was a strong believer in the sport and often tried to encourage us to grow the league and extend ball hockey beyond our summer schedule.  He greatly contributed to the success of the league by being one of our best promoters to hockey players all over Montreal.  He also contributed many ideas to the league over the years.

Yves started playing in the DMBHL in 1991 with Blackouts and Triple X.  Over the course of 18 years in the DMBHL, Yves played on too many teams to count.  In the early years, he was well known for his booming slap shot and aggressive play on defence.  This combo made him an annual contender for the Norris trophy in our A league.  In his honour, we will be renaming our Norris Trophy to the “Yves Nadeau Best Defenseman” trophy.  On occasion, this intensity did boil over and he managed to get tossed from one of our all star games showering the rink with a box of balls on his way to the dressing room.

Yves is the only player in our league history to play each season in our A division.  He also captained a team in the A division for several seasons.  Since 2005, he has organized the Phantoms where he played with his brothers Luc and Pierre.  He led this team to championships in 2006 and 2007.

His enjoyment for the game made Yves a great team mate.  I had the privilege of playing with Yves for many years.  Socializing after hockey was also an important part of the ritual.  In the room, discussions about “The Game” could go on for hours over a cold beverage.  One memorable night at DDO turned into ‘Bavaria’ night where he brought Bavaria beer with limes (of course).  With the party roaring and no one wanting to leave, he went made another ‘Bavaria’ run.  This is an experience that I am sure many people who play hockey in the west island have shared with Yves over the years.

Yves’ presence will be missed and never forgotten in the DMBHL version of ‘old time hockey’.

Naji Haddad – DMBHL Hall of Fame Member

Naji was one of the most unique people I have ever met. Before the DMBHL started, I met Naji at work and found out that he played street hockey every weekend with some of his friends as did I. Eventually that led to the obvious exhibition game, between my gang (including Norm Plouffe and Jerry Vander Wee) and his gang (including his brother Chris Haddad). This group of street hockey players formed the basis for what was to become the great Blackouts and White Knights teams of the first years of the DMBHL. Naji was extremely fast with a dangerous touch around the net, managing to score many goals off the rush. I had the pleasure of playing on a line with him for many years and we became great friends. Naji was extremely popular in ball hockey circles and later on joined the Dorval Ball Hockey League as well, making many friendships there before he passed away in 2008.

Naji brought many great years to the DMBHL and is sadly missed.
