Troy Ryan (May 8 1977 – Aug 18 2022)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Troy Ryan.
Troy was very well-known throughout the MBHL as one of its premier, if not best, offensive defensemen ever to play. Those who were fortunate enough to play with or against him will surely remember him as an extremely fit and fast (gazelle-like) player who, even though played as a D-man, was essentially a 4th forward out there. Very good at reading plays and cutting off passes, Troy would start the counterattack in blazing fashion, often having to wait for the forwards to catch up. He was never shy to voice his opinion or to call out an opponent (even his own teammates!!)
We can confidently say that Troy had an immensely positive impact on our league, helping it grow to what it has become today. After the game, you could always find him sharing his thoughts on teams, players, referees, and all things sports; his presence was truly felt.
Troy’s ball hockey career started in 1998 with Untouchables and he kept on playing until 2017.
You could frequently see him playing in MBHL’s premier levels as well as the Co-Ed league (starting in 2013) on teams such as Lynx, Bad Medicine, Vintage, PC Crisis.
He played over 800 games, totaling 300 goals and 1222 points, all while being a defenseman!
He was introduced into the MBHL Hall of Fame in 2007.
Tragically, on December 19, 2015, Troy suffered a stroke while at the ball hockey rink. He survived the stroke, but for several years after, experienced progressive health complications, until his passing on August 18th, 2022. So that others may have better outcomes, the family ask for donations in Troy’s memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation. Choose “In Memory” from the donation page and add [email protected] as the recipient email.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Troy’s close friends and family.
